The James M. DuPont Meteorite Collection - in more arid conditions [6]. Previous work has shown that most of the weathering a meteorite suffers occurs in the first 2000 yr after it falls to Earth, thereby recording, with only limited resetting, the conditions prevalent at that time [7]. The Arabian meteorites have a paramagnetic-to-total-ferric-Fe ratio of about 0.45, which is at the low, or wet, end of the spectrum of values observed in meteorites known to have fallen in other areas during relatively humid times, typcially ~0.5 (c.f., more arid conditions produce values ~0.8). Clearly, the more humid conditions that existed during the last ice age in southeast Arabia have affected the weathering mechanism of the meteorites falling there.
