JMDMT #1054 Microfossils of Cyanobacteria in Carbonaceous Meteorites

Back

The James M. DuPont Meteorite Collection - arrived were "more wet" than other desert regions, there is only a slight increase in the overall weathering rate. Indeed, from the limited number of analyses available, the 14C data may indicate, if anything, an overabundance of older meteorite falls (%3E25 k.y.). One mechanism that could play an important role here is the more active movement of sand in the past, resulting in the meteorites spending at least part of their time buried under protective large mobile sand dunes. These results indicate that the weathering rate of meteorites in southeast Arabia is not significantly worse than in other desert collection areas. The potential for a successful recovery program is good, so further 14C and Mossbauer analyses should permit full characterization
